Description
Here's an early pewter flat end female gonorrhea syphilis syringe over 225 years old for injecting liquid mercury & cures for venereal disease directly into one's body. We dug this rare early syringe from a 1700s trash pit (with permission from the property owner), in the oldest part of New Orleans near the old French Quarter. The syringe is made of a soft pewter or lead, so it has some dents...5 1/2"long.....threaded cap still unscrews...round ring handle on end of plunger....flat end has 5 little holes where the liquid cure would be pushed out of the syringe into the body......the dents could probably be straightened out if you pushed something tightly inside the tube. This syringe with rounded end with 5 holes was designed for use by females. It could also have been used by men for giving enemas. Mercury was one of the most common "cures" for Vd in the 1700s which gave rise to the saying "An evening with Venus: A month with Mercury". Many prostitutes had gonorrhea who passed the disease on to men, who in turn passed it on to their wives. Of course there was no cure for venereal disease, so home treatments of mercury and various other awful and dangerous drugs were used with these syringes.....to no avail....
