Description

Patented 1901 sterling silver medicine spoon with Red Cross shape on handle.  About 4-1/2 inches in length. No monogram. Good patina, no damage. Faint marks on reverse of bowl that include the company logo for JB and SM Knowles, Providence, RI, and 1000 (complete markings would read  Patent 1901, STERLING, and 925 1000).
This spoon allows for one dram (5 ml; one teaspoon) to be administered. The spoon could be placed on a level area, the patient readied for administration of the liquid dose, and then the spoon could be lifted to the mouth.
The Detroit Medical Journal published a review of this item in 1902 that read, "For those who believe in individual cleanliness, especially in the case of sickness in the family, this spoon is just the thing."
