Magnificent rococo devant-de-corsage with garnet & marcasite, around 1770
    description
In earlier epochs, lady's jewelry was not limited to the finger, décolleté and ear. Numerous other, now forgotten or rarely used pieces of jewelry also populated the rest of the body of the elegant lady and immersed her in a complete shine. An example of such jewelry, which is now forgotten, is the devant-de-corsage. This piece of jewelery, which is very typical of the Rococo, was sewn onto the front of the dress below the breast and emphasized the lady's waist. In the late 19th In the 19th century, this type of jewelry experienced a renaissance. Now the devant-de-corsage was understood as a brooch and was worn a little higher on the body, namely pinned to the chest of the then modern, expansive clothes. The present Devant-de-Corsage is made of silver and richly set with marcasites and garnets. The superbly preserved piece of jewelery from the late 18th century. Century shines mysteriously dark. The design is developed from a large double loop, which is tied around a large garnet. In the middle of the loop follows a series of flowers and rectangles; On the sides of the bow, ribbons made from wider and narrower bars frame the middle row. United at the lower end, all lines lead to a first-class, large, teardrop-shaped garnet. The use of marcasites, i.e. polished iron pyrite, was in the 18th century. In the 19th century, next to cut steel and glass pastes, it was initially a very common technique to imitate precious gemstones in cheaper materials. In the course of time, however, you gained a taste for the cool sheen of the marcasite, which was valued as an evening ornament in its own right. Nice examples of corresponding Jewelery can be found at Ginny Reddington Dawes / Olivia Collings: Georgian Jewelery 1714-1830, Woodbridge 2007, p. 105. Our Devant-de-Corsage is an impressive, large piece of jewelry. On its back, it still shows the two eyelets to which it was originally sewn on the dress - because Rococo jewelry was always sewn firmly onto the dress and then separated again after the occasion in order to be attached to another dress for the next party . During the 19th At the beginning of the 20th century, one of the previous owners got tired of this procedure and had a brooch attached to the back so that you can now wear the piece like a brooch. We were able to acquire the brooch from an estate in France, where the hallmark shows that it was imported in earlier times. Now it is waiting for you in Berlin - and for your next opportunity to shine again as in Marie Antoinette's time.

    about us
    Hofer antique jewelry
arose from the joy of beautiful things. It all started with my grandma, who was a lady who liked to adorn herself. She could tell something about each of her pieces of jewelery and when she opened her jewelery box, a world opened up: fond memories and touching stories connected with the pieces marked the highlights of a lived life. Based on these experiences, over the years a passion grew in me to deal with these small and always very personal objects.
