The New England Telephone and Telegraph Company was organized in the fall of 1883 as successor to the Telephone Despatch Company and several other telephone companies in various parts of New England. The company eventually merged with New York Telephone to become NYNEX (one of the original 7 Baby Bells). NYNEX later became part of Bell Atlantic, before it became today’s incarnation – Verizon.
