Rare Antique Gynecology Hysterotomy Surgical Instrument 19th Century
This ebony handled steel antique surgical tool is most likely a Sim's Rotating Knife or hysterotomy/trachelectomy tool that was used to incise the interior of a women's cervical canal. The knob on the end of the handle turns a geared wheel at the end of the steel shaft. The wheel then turns a small attached cylinder which has a hole for attachment of a blade. All portions of this mechanism are intact and operational. No blade or knife remains, but presumptively, this attachment would then rotate through and cut tissue as the entire tool was advanced and the handle knob turned. Some sophisticated engineering!
There is a small crack in the ebony handle near the base of the steel shaft, but does not affect the integrity or function of the piece. The body of the handle has alternating incised bands to improve grip. Traces of a maker's mark are apparent, but not legible, around the bulbous base of the shaft. The entire tool measures 10 5/8 inches in length. Very rare and unique item.
