Description

Scarce Early Antique Brass Medical Fleem, Bleeder, c.1800
DESCRIPTION:
Very scarce, very early original antique brass medical bleeding tool.  Used in place of leaches during the times when it was believed by the medical profession that bleeding a patient was a step towards healing from a variety of illnesses.
Consists of a brass "case" and 2 folding steel arms. A small blade on the end was sharpened and would pierce the flesh (quite deeply!).  One of the blades on this one has been snapped off, possibly done intentionally as it may have been unused or it got in the doctor's way. In any event it happened many many years ago. Otherwise in excellent condition.
Very unusual item and would make a great addition to a variety of collections. Probably made NO LATER THAN 1820, MORE THAN 200 YEARS AGO!! Could actually be significantly earlier than this and could have been used before and during the Revolutionary War. Could have been part of a Civil War surgeon's kit, although would not have been used too much by then.
Again, a nice piece for a medical or military collection or display.
