Formaldehyde was and still is used as a very effective sterilizer.
Its vapors could effectively sterilize a closed space.
Here was one such room sterilizer It used Formalin tablets that were placed in the top chamber of the burner and the lamp was lit and then the room was sealed.
The burner does not appear to have been used and is complete. The box is complete with the exception of the top, one side is missing. Directions for use are printed on all 4 sides of the box.
It is interesting to note, the patent info embossed on the wick flame knob is not quite correct! The U is upside down and the 3 is reversed. Bad day????
