3 1830s MIDDLETOWN, CT SMALLPOX & RELATED MANUSCRIPT MEDICAL DOCUMENTS
3 manuscript documents, measuring 8 x 6.5 or smaller. Middletown, CT: 1830s.
1832 manuscript document accounting for the services of David Harrison as town doctor, “To medical attendance on all the paupers… for one year from the 22 February 1831, including medicine &c. -”
“To vaccinating fifty five in Westfield and upper houses at 25c each… To 38 Gum Opium…” for a total payment of .23. While it doesn't say "Small Pox," it's clear that's what they were vaccinating against. It was a recurring problem in early America.
1831 manuscript document accounting for services rendered by Anthony Roberts, “To makeing[sic] fence on the Pest House…”. “The Pest House” was where smallpox victims were quarantined.
1832 manuscript document accounting for a number of town items, including “Beefe for Amorey Bacon Family wile[sic] in Pest House…” [again, smallpox quarantine].
The 3 items are in very good condition, creased at old folds, few tears, with manuscript dockets on versos.
A fascinating, early group of Middletown, CT manuscript ephemera, documenting a scary and deadly epidemic of smallpox affecting the townspeople [sadly, while we’re in the midst of our own deadly pandemic]. It was a periodical problem in early America, and there was also a outbreak of smallpox in Middletown, CT, in the 1870s, and I have some documents related to that period too, listed.
I also have a treasure trove of Middletown, CT manuscript material, so if you’re interested in the history of the town, or 19th century manuscript material, in general, please feel free to inquire. Thanks.
