Estate sale find, vintage Lucite acrylic paperweight souvenir commemorating GTEL's purchase of
common
stock in March of 1985.
Possibly related to the following 4/3/1985 UPI story:
"LOS ANGELES -- General Telephone of California has formed a subsidiary to market business and consumer telecommunications equipment and expand its share of the highly-competitive communications market, the utility announced.
'We're looking for any technology that complements the business we're in,' said Bernard Heiler, a former IBM executive named president of GTEL, the new, wholly owned subsidiary.
GTEL's aim is to be the sole provider of the customer's total communications needs, Heiler said.
The new subsidiary meets a requirement by the state Public Utilities Commission that the marketing business of the telephone company be separated from the regulated phone service by July 17. The requirement stems from the court-ordered breakup of AT&T."
